Weighing out options…
Choosing what’s right for your child, differently-abled or not, is challenging. The amount of times I’ve sat with my husband going around in circles is laughable, but we eventually settled on a path perfect for my daughter Ellie, and now, I shall share why I chose to send her to a day centre…
Ellie is 27 years old and found herself last year feeling really lost. She had never felt comfortable enough to get a job, her friends from college were starting to pan out and do other things, and she felt almost stuck in a rut…
Her down syndrome made it hard for her to get out in the world, she was conscious that people would deny her because of it. And, as any parent knows, you can reassure your child all the time but chances are they won’t really listen to you!
At home she was constantly busy with crafting and creating, and felt secure in her own company the majority of the time. But myself and my husband thought to ourselves, wouldn’t it be nice if she was doing this surrounded by others?
So we thought about a day centre, and here’s why:
They have specially trained carers, that aren’t only professional, but have experience with learning disabilities
They host fun activities (Ellie has been loving the crafts at her day centre)
They home-cook the meals (Our Els is very fussy and isn’t ever disappointed)
Some encourage learning and life skills and motivate their members to find jobs
And, this may seem obvious, but they’re safe! When Ellie is at home alone I can’t help but feel worried, but I know she’s in good hands!
So, if you’re stuck on what do with your differently-abled child, I would really recommend a Day Centre!
