Welcoming Learning Disabilities to The Willows
Since we started The Willows, we knew we wanted to help as many people as possible.
We knew we wanted to branch out, and use our knowledge and expertise on learning disabilities to create a skills hub, encouraging independence in life, at some point in our journey. Our sister company, Silverstars Care, allowed us to create a network with those elderly and vulnerable or suffering with dementia, therefore we targeted our centre to them when we opened…
Of course, we are having a blast with our elder members, and have even been joined by a few, slightly younger individuals with other brain infections along the way. The Willows acts, for them, as a chance to be social, stimulate their mental capacity as well as have great fun engaging in activities, so why not open this opportunity to all those who are differently abled?
With the idea still on paper, we began brainstorming everything we need to factor in now we’ve decided to accommodate to more people. We had the staff, trained extensively to deal with a range of disabilities. We had the space, wheelchair accessible and comfortable. And, of course, we know how to host fun and engaging activities. “Wait.. what if we incorporate a ‘life skills’ element into the fun, and encourage independency?” Jackpot!
